How to Reduce Sensitivity After Teeth Whitening

Like with any dental procedure you’re likely to experience some degree of sensitivity after a teeth whitening treatment. This is normal and usually subsides within a few days. However, there are steps you can take to reduce the discomfort as quickly as possible.

Here are some effective methods for reducing sensitivity after teeth whitening–courtesy of our teeth whetting experts here at Folsom Dental Esthetics.

1. Use Desensitizing Toothpaste

Desensitizing toothpaste contains compounds that help reduce the nerve stimulation in your teeth which is responsible for causing sensitivity.

Make sure to brush your teeth twice a day with desensitizing toothpaste and you should see an improvement in your overall sensitivity levels within a few days.

When brushing make sure to use a soft bristle brush and stick to gentle circular motions. Additionally, use lukewarm water when rinsing instead of hot water.

2. Avoid Hot and Cold Foods

Hot and cold foods will only further irritate sensitive teeth, so it’s best to avoid them while your mouth is still recovering from the teeth whitening procedure. Stick with lukewarm meals that won’t cause any extra discomfort during this time frame.

3. Drink More Water

Drinking water throughout the day is not only good for overall health but also helps to reduce sensitivity after teeth whitening treatments. By drinking water, you wash away any remaining debris or particles that may have been left on the surface of your teeth during the procedure. It also prevents dehydration which can make existing pain or discomfort worse.

4. Avoid Acidic and Sugary Foods and Drinks

Many acidic and sugary foods and drinks can exacerbate any existing tooth sensitivity following a whitening procedure and should be avoided for at least 48 hours afterwards if possible.

This includes items such as sodas, citrus fruits, pickles, vinegar, ice cream, etc., which all contain acids that erode enamel and can increase sensitivity levels in already sensitive teeth following a whitening treatment.

5. Apply Cold Compresses

Place a cold compress in plastic wrap and apply directly to the area in question for up to five minutes at a time, repeating every few hours as needed until the discomfort subsides.

6. Apply Fluoride Gel

Following a whitening session, your dentist may provide you with fluoride gel specifically designed for treating tooth sensitivity. Apply this gel as directed to reduce sensitivity.

7. Take Over-the-Counter Painkillers

If necessary, taking over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen can help reduce any sensitivity or pain caused by the procedure itself.

Ask your Folsom dentist before taking anything so they can advise you on what medications are safe for use following a whitening session and follow their suggested dosage instructions carefully for optimal results.
