Many people think dentistry is about your teeth. But in many ways, dentistry is really about your gums. It is your gums that are most responsible for pain. It is your gums that are most likely to become diseased or damaged. Your gums are also one of the more sensitive areas of the mouth.
That’s why when we receive calls about dental emergencies, it is not always about the teeth. It is about a gum injury. Your gums are considered soft tissue, which means that they can be damaged by a variety of different accidents:
- Sports Injuries
Even hot liquids can damage gums, as can chewing on a very sharp or hard food. As a gum injury specialist in Folsom and Sacramento, Dr. Chen and his team have seen their share of gum injuries. If you have a gum injury emergency, or you’re not sure, make sure you call our office right away at 916-983-6051.
What to Do if You Suspect a Gum Injury
If there is considerable pain or bleeding, it is important to call our office right away. For most gum injuries, the amount of bleeding is minor, although because of the saliva in the mouth it is not uncommon to experience what looks like a lot of blood. If you see bleeding, try to stick some gauze (or a clean towel, if no gauze is available) on the wound and hold it there for about 5 minutes.
It is then important to switch to a new piece of gauze or a different part of the towel, hold for another 5 minutes. If you still see blood, repeat one more time. Any bleeding that has lasted over 15 minutes is a dental emergency. If you are in mild pain, you can take a non-NSAID pain reliever, like Tylenol, and see if it goes away over time. Severe pain warrants a visit to emergency care.
Other Gum Emergencies
Gum injuries are not always the result of trauma. Sometimes, untreated gum disease can become a more significant – and possibly urgent – mouth issue. For example, if your gums are infected, that infection can cause pressure on the nerve, causing extreme pain. Over time, the infection may even spread to other areas of the body.
This is one example of gum disease that, while not technically an injury, could result in injury-like gum pain that requires some type of dental intervention.
