Dental Emergencies – Folsom, CA

There is often nothing as stressful, painful, and confusing as a dental emergency. Your teeth are connected to some of your strongest nerves, causing immense pain when they become damaged or irritated, and if a tooth breaks, chips, or comes out, the effects can in some cases be permanent – especially without immediate care.

No one plans for a dental emergency, but if you have one, make sure you take some immediate steps to address it.

What to Do If You (Or Your Child) Has a Dental Emergency?

Dental emergencies can affect both children and adults. The following tips can help you control them, and be sure and contact our Folsom office right away at Esthetic Reflections in Dentistry Phone Number 916-983-6051.

  • Severe Toothache

Toothaches can best be controlled by taking your usual pain medication. Both Aspirin and Tylenol are usually enough to temporarily control the toothache. Aspirin can be used as well. There is an urban legend that putting aspirin on your tooth or gums can help with the toothache, but it is not recommended and can actually damage your gums. Call the dentist immediately for further information.

  • Tooth Knocked Out

Any time a tooth is knocked out, even if it is a baby tooth, it is considered a dental emergency. For baby teeth, no additional action is needed. For adult teeth, you will need to try to save the tooth.

Hold the tooth by the top (not the root). You can briefly rinse the tooth but do not scrub it, as that can remove any remaining pieces of root. You can try to place it back in your gums with a clean towel, or place the tooth in a container with salt water, milk, or saliva. Call an emergency dentist immediately.

Teeth need to be placed back in the mouth in less than an hour if they are to be saved.

  • Broken/Chipped Teeth

Broken teeth can be painful. Take the pain reducer of your choosing and use an ice pack to bring any swelling down. Call your Folsom dentist. If you have the broken piece of tooth, you will want to bring it with you. Keep it moist by placing it in a clean wet towel.
