There is no “I” in Team but there is a “U” in volunteer!

In March 2012, Dr. Chen had the opportunity to volunteer with the Remote Access Medical (RAM) Clinic at Cal Expo in Sacramento. Over 5000 people showed up for free dental, medical, and vision care. Many people spent the night camped out in the parking lot through the rain and cold in order to be sure they would be seen.

“It was so rewarding to be able to be part of this organization of healthcare providers and be able to help so many people who are unable to afford healthcare. Although many had great needs we were only able to do a few of the highest priority patients due to the sheer number of people who needed care. Many patients may not have had as many teeth to smile with as when they started, however, they smiled big with their hearts, and were so grateful for the care we were able to provide to them. Every time I do something like this I think I receive more good from doing it than the patient receiving it,” said Dr Chen.

Dr. Chen is not the only member of our dental team that has volunteered at community events. Last weekend, our RDA, Debra and Kitty, one of our hygienists, joined 600 other dental professionals at the California Dental Association Foundation’s free dental clinic, CDA Cares, held at Cal-Expo. Dental care was provided to over 2,026 people. Dentists and dental professionals provided cleanings, fillings, extractions, oral health education, and assistance in finding a dentist in their area. “Giving back to the community is a big reason why I am involved in dentistry. The people we saw were scared and most could not afford dental care – it makes me want to cry just thinking about it – but, to be able to help them and ease their fears was truly one of the most satisfying things I have ever done,” stated Debra.

We are so happy to be able to help out others in our community. “The human contribution is the essential ingredient. It is only in the giving of oneself to others that we truly live.”
